One question we are asked quite regularly is whether it’s worth paying for caravan storage when you’ve got space at home on the drive or in the garden. Keeping your caravan at home does seem like the obvious choice as it’s nearby, it’s convenient, and, of course, there are no storage fees to pay.
However, after speaking to so many caravan owners throughout the years, we’ve found there are often a few more things to consider than people initially realise, so we thought we would discuss those in this blog.
The truth, of course, is that every caravan or motorhome owner is different, and what works perfectly for one person may not be the best solution for another. So, if you’re weighing up the caravan storage benefits against keeping your caravan at home, here are a few things worth considering:
When people compare home storage with a professional caravan storage facility, the first thing they usually consider is the cost, which is understandable, as nobody wants to spend money unnecessarily.
It is, however, worth looking at the bigger picture. Storing a caravan at home can entail hidden costs and compromises that aren’t immediately apparent. Eg. will you need additional security devices, does your insurance cover this, are you happy to lose valuable driveway or garden space, or have the front of your home obscured? Some owners might find themselves constantly moving vehicles around to access the caravan, or simply to make everyday parking easier.
As we said, every situation is different, but from our conversations, many say it becomes an inconvenience surprisingly quickly.
When people first get in touch with us about storing their caravan, motorhome or other large vehicle, it is likely that security is one of the first things mentioned. A caravan represents a significant investment, so it’s natural to want to feel confident that it’s being stored in a suitable environment when it’s not in use.
Many owners tell us they simply feel more comfortable knowing their caravan is being kept within a dedicated storage facility, rather than sitting outside their home all year round.
If you are at the stage of comparing options, it’s worth asking questions about site security, access arrangements and whether the facility holds recognised industry accreditations such as CaSSOA. Barnfield Storage Park is proud to be CaSSOA Platinum Accredited, the highest level currently awarded by the association. Whilst we do not have security guards on site or CCTV, we do have secure gated access for your peace of mind.
Let’s be honest, caravans aren’t small.
While many people have plenty of room to accommodate a caravan at home, others find it takes up a significant amount of space.
We’ve spoken to owners over the years who initially planned to keep their caravan at home but later decided they would rather reclaim their driveway, garden or parking area. Some have had a change of heart after neighbourly discussions, some very polite and friendly, others not so much!
In some locations, there may also be restrictions, covenants or practical limitations that make storing a caravan at home more complicated than expected. If you live on a newer housing development or a private road, it’s worth checking whether any covenants or management company rules apply before making plans.
It’s not necessarily a deal-breaker, but it’s certainly something worth considering before making a decision.
One of the biggest benefits of using professional caravan storage is that dedicated storage facilities are designed specifically with leisure vehicles in mind.
At Barnfield, for example, customers have access to dedicated hardstanding plots, wash facilities, an air line for tyre maintenance and an independent servicing engineer on site. From our customers we know that these are the sorts of practical features that can make caravan ownership a little easier over time.
Many owners also appreciate having room to manoeuvre their caravan without worrying about fences, flower beds, parked cars or narrow driveways. Especially important if you only drive it sporadically, and perhaps aren’t as confident as you are behind the wheel of your car without a caravan attached. Who wants to scrape the side of their motorhome or caravan whilst the neighbours are watching?
It’s one of those things that often isn’t considered until you’ve experienced both options.
One thing we’ve noticed over the years is that many customers choose professional storage for convenience rather than any single feature. They like knowing where the caravan is, knowing it’s stored in a dedicated environment and knowing they don’t have to work around it at home.
For some people, that simplicity is worth just as much as the practical benefits of having it parked at home. After all, caravanning is supposed to be enjoyable, a trip, a holiday, something to destress not stress you more. Anything that helps remove stress and makes preparing for a trip easier can be a positive thing.
If you’ve got plenty of space at home, suitable access, and you’re happy with your security arrangements, home storage will probably work perfectly well for you.
However, if you’d rather keep your driveway clear, take advantage of dedicated facilities and store your caravan in a professionally managed environment, a storage facility could be the better option. Something we hear quite often is owners chatting amongst themselves at the facility, and finding new places to explore, swapping tips or even making new friends to meet up with!
There definitely isn’t a right or wrong answer.
The most important thing is to choose the option that best suits your property, your lifestyle and how you use your caravan.
At the end of the day, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.
Some people wouldn’t dream of storing their caravan anywhere other than at home, while others are happy to reclaim their driveway and leave the storage side of things to a specialist facility.
The important thing is understanding the pros and cons of both options before making a decision.

It can be, but it’s worth considering factors such as security measures, insurance requirements and the value of the space the caravan occupies.
Many owners choose professional storage for the additional convenience, dedicated facilities, security and peace of mind it can provide.
Usually yes. Keeping a caravan or motorhome on a residential driveway typically changes the risk profile in the eyes of your insurer compared to keeping it in a dedicated, secure storage facility. Insurance requirements vary between providers, so it’s always worth checking directly with your insurer.
CaSSOA is an independent organisation that assesses caravan storage facilities against recognised standards relating to site management and security. Read our blog here.
